Introduction
The ultimate success of a project depends largely on the degree
and quality of sponsorship. A project without an empowered and committed
sponsor is doomed to failure. One of the key problems with far too
many IT projects is that they have either no sponsor, or the sponsor
is remiss in performing his/her responsibilities. Many project sponsors
believe their responsibilities end when the charter is approved
and the budget is signed. Most of these sponsors soon disappear
from the project scene, only to reappear when the inevitable happens
– the team discovers that the project is extensively late and/or
over budget. Project sponsors (especially business unit executives)
need a thorough understanding of the discipline and practices paramount
to project success. Sponsors need to provide visible support to
project teams throughout the life of the project.
